EAST GREENSBORO, NC (May 27, 2022) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has been ranked among the top social work schools in North Carolina for 2022 by the Social Work Degree Center.
NC A&T is the only historically black college or university named to the website’s top 10 list. The university’s Department of Social Work and Sociology is housed in the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences.
Students can obtain a BA in Sociology, a BSW, an MSW and a Ph.D. in social work, the last two of joint social work programs with the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The joint MSW is ranked among the top 75 such programs in the United States, according to US News & World Report’s Graduate School Rankings for 2022.
“This ranking reflects the hard work of our outstanding social work faculty,” said Elimelda Ongeri, Ph.D., acting dean of Hairston College. “Social work graduates are key players in addressing health equity, a priority for Hairston College.”
Through the study of sociology and social work, students gain real-world knowledge and skills relevant to a wide range of rewarding careers. These skills enhance students’ ability to assess new and unfamiliar situations, select and apply qualitative and quantitative techniques to creatively solve practical problems, and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
“The BSW is a four-year program that prepares students to become effective social workers in a variety of roles that ultimately advocate for human rights at all levels” while “the MSW program focuses on preparing students to work in a multicultural environment,” the website notes. “Graduates are prepared to promote economic and social justice that benefits the people of North Carolina.”
