Nigerian comedian, actor and sketch artist, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Mr Funny or Oga Sabinus, and some social media personalities have been crowned ‘Kings of Content’ at a nightclub called Secret Palace in Lekki, Lagos .
The event, held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, brought together some of the country’s most popular skit makers and content creators.
Other content creators who were crowned on the night were Adesokan Emmanuel, aka Shank Comics; Chukwuebuka Amuzie, (Brain Jotter); Nasiru Lawal, aka Nasboi; and Mike Nwogu, (Pretty Mike).
Rising singer, Alexander Adelabu aka Magixx was also on hand to entertain the audience with some of his hit songs, such as “All Over”.
Other highlights of the evening were the parade of ladies who took the stage with Pretty Mike to receive his ‘crown’, while Brain Jotter asked the audience to call him ‘Igwe’. After getting his own crown, Sabinus jokingly promised to back the venue with 15 billion naira, pretending to be an investor (a name he calls himself in some of his skits).
Sabinus was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and had his early education in Port Harcourt.
He went on to earn his BA in Language and Communication Studies from the University of Port Harcourt. He was born in 1985.
Sabinus’ career started in 2015 but he started to see mainstream success in 2019.
The sketch creator was nominated in the inaugural 2021 edition of The Humor Awards Academy alongside fellow comedian Basketmouth. Mr Funny discovered his acting talent at a young age. He began actively doing comedy sketches while in college.
It was in 2015 during a special week of the School Students’ Union. Mr. Funny decided to pursue his career by uploading various comedy sketches to his social media handles, especially Instagram.
Soon, he started getting noticed by top Instagram influencers who started sharing his skits. His following on the platform has grown.
Sabinus broke into the comedy industry in 2019.
His popularity has earned him notable recognition. Oga Sabinus is the brand ambassador of a popular betting site: Oddstackr and many others. Some of his role models who influenced him in his acting career are Mr. Ibu and Charles Inojie.
He has also acted in several Nollywood movies, like “Billionaire’s Bride”, “Man of War”, etc.
In May 2022, Sabinus sued two Nigerian food companies for allegedly using his image and slogans without his permission. Specifically, Friesland Food reportedly used the trademark phrase “something hoodge” to advertise its Peak Milk product; while UAC used an animated image of Mr Funny in advertisements.
